Automatic assignment of lexical stress in italian

چکیده

An automatic method to assign lexical stress in Italian from a written text is presented here. This method is based on specific morphological properties of the Italian morphemes, which can only be stressed on the last or the penul timate syllable. Using a morphological analyzer and a morpheme database, the assignment program attempts to analyze each entry into a morpheme followed by one or more suffixes and flexions, which can contain a stressable syllable. The resul ting stressed syllable is determined by applying a simple final stress rule to these elements.

Ouration as the Main Correlate of Lexical Stress in Italian

In a free-stress language like Italian, automatic detection of stressed syllables is of great importance for access to the lexicon. In continuous speech recognition systems this information can facilitate lexical access since it constrains the location of ward boundaries and can reduce the process of ward hypothesizing and matching. The paper summarizes the results of acoustic and perceptual st...

Lexical stress assignment in Italian developmental dyslexia

Stress assignment to Italian polysyllabic words is unpredictable, because stress is neither marked nor predicted by rule. Stress assignment, especially to low frequency words, has been reported to be a function of stress dominance and stress neighbourhood. Two experiments investigate stress assignment in sixth-grade, skilled and dyslexic, readers. In Experiment 1, skilled readers were not affec...

Q2Stress: A database for multiple cues to stress assignment in Italian.

In languages where the position of lexical stress within a word is not predictable from print, readers rely on distributional information extracted from the lexicon in order to assign stress. Lexical databases are thus especially important for researchers willing to address stress assignment in those languages. Here we present Q2Stress, a new database aimed to fill the lack of such a resource f...

Bilingual vocabulary size and lexical reading in Italian.

In the present study we investigated how the vocabulary size of English-Italian bilinguals affects reading aloud in Italian (L2) modulating the reader's sensitivity to lexical aspects of the language. We divided adult bilinguals in two groups according to their vocabulary size (Larger - LV, and smaller - SV), and compared their naming performance to that of native Italian (NI) readers. In Exper...

Stress Priming in Reading and the Selective Modulation of Lexical and Sub-Lexical Pathways

Four experiments employed a priming methodology to investigate different mechanisms of stress assignment and how they are modulated by lexical and sub-lexical mechanisms in reading aloud in Italian. Lexical stress is unpredictable in Italian, and requires lexical look-up. The most frequent stress pattern (Dominant) is on the penultimate syllable [laVOro (work)], while stress on the antepenultim...
